Clamps are used to join fixtures to either trussing or a lighting bar. They come in many shapes and sizes, though like everything rigging related need to be used safely and checked regularly. A clamp will have a SWL (safe working load) and it is important to stick to this.
The clamp pictured is what is known as a G Clamp. They are attached to an omega bracket or a mounting braket on lighter fixtures such as small moving heads or generic fixtures like the Par 64. It is recommended they are tightend finger tight with perhaps one or two turns on a wing-nut spanner to ensure they are secure. A very important rule with wing nuts is not to over tighten them as you risk damaging the thread and the bar they are attached to.
