Health and Safety may seem like a joke but really it isn't, every year people die from silly things that could have been avoided easily through following some simple steps. There are two main things to remember when talking about Health and Safety:

- If you don't have time to do it safely, then you don't have time to do it.

General Safety
- Always make sure there is always a trained first aider on site along with a good first aid kit.
- Don't work while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
- Don't block fire exits or designated evacuation routes.
- Avoid running cables through walkways - even if it is taped down it can cause a trip hazard and the pressure can sometimes damage the cable! If you have to run one across a walkway, use a plastic protector ramp.
- ALWAYS USE A SAFETY CABLE!
Ladder Safety
- Always make sure someone foots/steadies the ladder.
- Always use ladders and lifts on level, even surfaces.
- Always check that the ladder is not damaged before use - if it is, or you are unsure, DO NOT use it!
- Always apply extendible feet for extra stability.
- Use fall protection when climbing above your own height, climbing harness are not sufficient - buy a proper working at height fall protection kit.
- Don't leave any tools or equipment at the top of the ladder unattended.
- Ensure all of the tools you are going to work with at height are secured properly to your person and that any equipment also has adequate fall protection.
Electrical Safety
- Don't overload cables or circuits - pay for the extra extension cables and power points.
- Make sure all equipment is properly grounded and that it has been PAT tested.
- Always turn off equipment before opening it for maintenance.
- Don't use equipment that is damaged.
- Don't touch it if you don't know what it does!
Fire Safety
- Always ensure you are aware of the fire safety protocols wherever you are working. This should include the evacuation routes, muster points and the locations of fire extinguishers.
- Never leave electrical equipment un-attended for extended periods of time.
- Whenever using pyro ensure to flame proof any cloths, drapes or scenery in the immediate area and anywhere that there is the potential for fall out to occur.
- Whenever using smoke or haze, ensure that you have the permission of the venue manager and that suitable fire safety steps have been taken. This may include hiring a designated fire marshal for the event. The risks of using smoke or haze should be detailed in the risk assessment.
- Never block fire exits or evacuation routes.
Clothing
- When working with heavy equipment such as on a load in or strike, always ensure you are wearing suitable safety footwear such as steel toe capped boots.
- Ensure that all clothing is suitable for the workplace and that it will allow a full range of motion whilst working.
- When working at height always use a personal fall protection system.
- When rigging try to wear gloves as these can protect your hands from burns and cuts, we recommend 'Dirty Rigger' gloves.
- Always ensure the correct use of PPE, including hard hats when working at ground level.
